as we mentioned during the grand tour, we enjoy a good read at casa de miel, hence our for the sensual intellectual sidebar.
since that section has a focus on nonfiction, art and spirituality, here are a few novels we suggest for enhancing your sparkle:
the temple of my familiar, alice walker
most of us are quite familiar with mama alice, but if you read the color purple and missed temple, do yourself a favor and beg/borrow a copy. this book takes the trauma of purple and turns it to triumph, spanning centuries and delving deep into the collective consciousness of the african woman.
parable of the sower, octavia butler
who knows what mama octavia would have done had her life not been cut short in 2006, but she left us with a brilliant body of work to remember her by. parable of the sower follows lauren olamina--an empath and prophetess--through an as-yet-unrealized-but-highly-believable future.
corregidora, gayl jones
much of the pain, despair, hope and joy of the slave trade is described in this book.
sassafrass, cypress and indigo, ntozake shange
sometimes cleverly disguised as "young adult" literature, sassafrass... is mandatory reading for any quirky black girl. add cool points for its references to the diasporan ifa tradition.
in addition, anything by sapphire, toni morrison, jessica care moore, audre lorde, ursula rucker, staceyann chin, or ai qualifies for this list.
