a love note

or a little afternoon delight, if you prefer.

we shared a quote from mama and some recommended reading over on facebook.  go see!

the word

today's word comes from the ethical slut: a practical guide to polyamory, open relationships & other adventures by dossie easton and janet w. hardy.

We dream of a world where no one is driven by desires they have no hope of fulfilling, where no one suffers from shame for their desires, or embarrassment about their dreams, where no one is starving from lack of sex. We dream of a world where no one is limited by rules that dictate that they must be less of a person, and less of a sexual person, than they have the capacity to be.

We dream of a world where nobody gets to vote on your life choices, or who you choose to love, or how you choose to express that love, except yourself and your lovers. We dream of a time and a place where we will all be free to publicly declare our love, for whoever we love, however we love them.

And may we all look forward to a lifetime of dreams come true.

and let the ch'uch say...

the word

today's word is another jewel from the holy book by the illustrious dr. clarissa pinkola estes, women who run with the wolves.

and so we read...

Tears are a river that takes you somewhere. Weeping creates a river around the boat that carries your soul-life. Tears lifet your boat off the rocks, off dry ground, carrying it downriver to someplace new, someplace better.

the word

today's word is from thich nhat hanh, vietnamese buddhist monk and author. this passage is an excerpt from the "meditation on love" in the book peace is every step.

The source of love is deep in us, and we can help others realize a lot of happiness. One word, one action, or one thought can reduce another person's suffering and bring him joy. One word can give comfort and confidence, destroy doubt, help someone avoid a mistake, reconcile a conflict, or open the door to liberation. One action can save a person's life or help him take advantage of a rare opportunity. One thought can do the same, because thoughts always lead to words and actions. If love is in our heart, every thought, word and deed can bring about a miracle. Because understanding is the very foundation of love, words and actions that emerge from our love are always helpful.

the word

today's word comes to us from saul williams, shamanic soul poet.

this excerpt is chapter 26 in the dead emcee scrolls: the lost teachings of hip hop. and so we read:

When you say you love me a series of changes begin to occur. First there is a warmth. The warmth generates heat. The heat permeates the cold. The ice melts. Limbs and branches are thawed. Blood circulates. A feeling of comfort pervades.

The body is oxygenated. It becomes limber. It yearns to dance, to move about freely and express its newfound energy. Music is sought through voice or ear. The heart identifies the rhythm of the song and synchronizes its pace. A union is formed between the visible and the invisible.

Song is the invitation from the primordial unseen to become one with that which is seen. To nod your head is to agree that the moment is godly: communion. To dance is to become God. There are many ways of dancing. Follow your heart.

you're such a flirt.

greetings, illuminated ones.

it's been awhile, but, to paraphrase john lennon, life is what happens while you're making other plans.

let's take a moment to examine the idea of flirtation, hm?

flirting, like any other skill, is innate for some and learned for others. one excellent treatment of the topic can be found in mama gena's school of womanly arts. one of her best tips, in our opinion, is that we should refuse to confine flirtation to the bar scene or open mic night.

flirt with yourself. turn your most aggravating chore--dusting, for instance--into an appreciative survey of the beautiful things you've surrounded yourself with, the books you love, the gifts you've been given over the years.

flirt with your food. notice the sunny juiciness of fruit. appreciate the labor and love that went into the preparation. smile to yourself as you dig into your dessert.

flirt with the universe! take your desires--no matter how "impossible"--and roll them around in your mind like a cat toys with a ball of string. hear them out. pull them to their logical conclusion and beyond.

you might be surprised at what you discover.

2.03.2009

the word

today we will examine a passage from women who run with the wolves by dr. clarissa pinkola estes, one of the sacred texts revered by witchy women worldwide.

chapter: "clear water: nourishing the creative life"
verse: "fire on the river"

it may also be that a woman's creative process is misunderstood or disrespected by those around her. it is up to her to inform them that when she has 'that look' in her eyes, it does not mean she is a vacant lot waiting to be filled. it means she is balancing a big cardhouse of ideas on a single fingertip, and she is carefully connecting all the cards using tiny crystalline bones and a little spit, and if she can just get it all to the table without it falling down or flying apart, she can bring an image from the unseen world into being. to speak to her in that moment is to create a harpy wind that blows the entire structure to tatters. to speak to her in that moment is to break her heart.

sexy news

mama's still a woman...an excerpt from love in the time of colic

a note on the long haul...depression or disappointment?

obama ain't the only one in love...how love fueled this man's spiritual journey.

erotophile or erotophobe? of course, we're all leaning towards the former distinction around here, but this could give you some good questions to ask your date friday night...

magical books for magical womyn

as we mentioned during the grand tour, we enjoy a good read at casa de miel, hence our for the sensual intellectual sidebar.

since that section has a focus on nonfiction, art and spirituality, here are a few novels we suggest for enhancing your sparkle:

the temple of my familiar, alice walker
most of us are quite familiar with mama alice, but if you read the color purple and missed temple, do yourself a favor and beg/borrow a copy. this book takes the trauma of purple and turns it to triumph, spanning centuries and delving deep into the collective consciousness of the african woman.

parable of the sower, octavia butler
who knows what mama octavia would have done had her life not been cut short in 2006, but she left us with a brilliant body of work to remember her by. parable of the sower follows lauren olamina--an empath and prophetess--through an as-yet-unrealized-but-highly-believable future.

corregidora, gayl jones
much of the pain, despair, hope and joy of the slave trade is described in this book.

sassafrass, cypress and indigo, ntozake shange
sometimes cleverly disguised as "young adult" literature, sassafrass... is mandatory reading for any quirky black girl. add cool points for its references to the diasporan ifa tradition.

in addition, anything by sapphire, toni morrison, jessica care moore, audre lorde, ursula rucker, staceyann chin, or ai qualifies for this list.

add a comment and share your favorites with the class!
